Chinese translation of As Equals
The Chinese translation of As Equals was published by Fudan University Press on 28 March 2026. It was translated by Chen Yan and edited by Shi Lili. Chen Yan is a professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of History at Fudan University, as well as the director of the Center for Oral History Studies at Fudan University. Chen Yan’s research and teaching mainly focus on the history of the Republic of China, women's history, oral history, and gender studies. Her representative works include A Study of China's Diplomatic System During the Anti-Japanese War, A Century of Chinese Feminist Thought, War and Gender: Shanghai 1932-1945, and Qingyun Manman: The Story of Fudan University Girls (1925-1949).
The title of the Chinese translated version of As Equals is “On Equal Footing: The Legendary Women of the Sugar King Family in Indonesia”, by Ye Liuxin (author). The Chinese version is currently only available in China, and can be purchased from Fudan University Press’s account on Tabao (Small), JD and Dangdang online platforms.

Daryl Yeap is the The Straits Times Bestselling author of As Equals: The Oei Women of Java. Daryl was born in Malaysia and educated in Australia. She started her career as a banking analyst before shifting into historical research and biographies. Her first book The King’s Chinese: From Barber to Banker, the story of Yeap Chor Ee and the Straits Chinese tells the story of the Straits British Chinese immigrants, told through the life of her great-grandfather, Yeap Chor Ee who came from Fujian. As Equals is her second book. She writes with a keen eye for detail and a great appreciation for the region’s history and culture.
